This year, to honor ARBOR DAY, our company has decided upon planting a tree

CellularWindowShades.com has been in our “new” home three years now, and our plot of land has slowly taken on a new character. There are a couple of keen gardeners in our midst! So among the thoughts on what type of tree we might plant came such thoughts as:

  • I’d like to see something flowering.
  • It must produce something edible – cherry? pear? apple?
  • It should be something that can survive with little maintenance; it must be something that survives long and cold winters.

Current thoughts are leaning towards this little beauty:

apple blossom

One WordPress Blogger has this particular specimen in the garden. I was so happy to find Gardening in the Lines: A Diary of Gardens because I have so little desire to garden, but LOVE looking at the work of others. Flowers, shrubs, quiet spaces in cool corners – all call to me (though do I heed that call by doing anything myself?? Does raking in the fall count?). Alas, it may not be an active blog – but the photos are still there for all to see.

Some of my favorite pins on Pinterest involve “the garden”. Our board for “GARDENS & FLOWERS” shows a broad range of applications, from potted plants and cut arrangements, to vast public gardens. And don’t discount the whimsical: find our hollowed log planter or mosaic stone swirl walkway. FUN!

There is one thing about being in the window shades business: Windows look out on the world. And whether you cover your windows for light control or privacy, when you look out you hope to see something that makes you smile…. And flowers – with their bright colors and pungent scents – are the ticket. Here in Vermont we’ve had a recent snow storm, but we’re told that “spring is just around the corner”. Our Arbor Day Tree — whatever variety it might in the end be — will soon herald that blossoming season: spring cleaning, new decorating, open windows, garden parties.

Pantone’s Color Trends Report for Fall 2013 is today’s TALK!

Now you will ask, “Has ‘fall color trends’ anything to do with window coverings??” Indeed! especially when you wish to incorporate something *new* in your home decor scheme.

Q: To take advantage of the fall trends, do I have to change my window shades?

A: Not at all; just think of drapes or blinds as an additional design layer. Here’s a “before & after”:

barb_before

BEFORE: Barb’s home was a chilly bank of windows on a winter’s day, and a boiler bank on hot summer days. The lack of window decorating gave the room a half-moved-in appearance, while the garden shed developed into the paramount item in her view outdoors.

Sunroom

AFTER: With shades and romans, Barb now had a finished look to her windows, also some “pattern” and “color,” and — surprise! — choice: she could pull up her “top down bottom up” cellular shades, or pull down her Roman blinds! What she liked best -> her view was now the trees, not the garden shed.

Q: I’m starting from scratch in decorating my bedroom; what COLORS can you offer, say, in black out fabric?

BO-colors

Black Out Double Cell Cellular fabrics offer a pleasing array of jewel-tones, whites, creams, and earth-tones. Compare to this year’s Pantone Palette:

pantone fall colors

Mykonos Blue – a jewel in the Aegean = think, MARINA

Linden Green – the soft tone of a Linden leaf = think, CYPRESS

Koi – the fleeting flashes of a fish = think, CINNAMON

Carafe – their “rich, glamorous” brown = think, CWS’s COFFEE BEAN

Q: I love “Vivacious” and “Turbulence”, but I don’t think I’m bold enough to paint a wall pink or deep grey. What else can I do?

Accessorize! Small SPLASHES of color are often as useful and more entertaining than a broad swathe of today’s latest color. Check out some of our Pinterest “Just for Fun” pins. Imagine them in your home, as posters, pillows, or props:

cat with cup

Posters – “my favorite things”

pillows

Pillows – one for every family member

tea

Props – wind-chime teapot

The Cat with Cup introduces that fabulous Mykonos Blue scarf and a touch of Vivacious in the ears; Acai features in the teenager’s trousers; while Carafe and Turbulence are echoed in the rusted-silver teapot chime.

Fall is a time of vibrant color display here in Vermont — we see more golden leaves littering the parking lot of our window shades manufactory every day. Autumn colors rank high on Pantone’s “trending” list, and you, too, can introduce them into your home.

And through the end of October (27th to be exact) you’ll save $30 per shade for Lift Option Upgrades — which means two of the lift options — Smoothy Continuous Cord or Top Down Bottom Up — are actually *free*!

With temperatures here in the Northeast topping 90-degrees today (whew!), I thought I’d post a few “summertime” kinds of activities for the upcoming week-end.

How timely to read on houzz an article about FLAGS, seeing as today marks the cusp of a three-day holiday weekend here in the States: for Memorial Day.

flagsAuthor Alison Hodgson’s own decorating scheme is shown in the photo: a pleated fan above the door; flags line the walkway.

The building my mother lives in has a flag pole — flag flaps in the breeze all weathers, all hours. So it is a surprise to read that although the ‘inclement’ weather indicative should be observed, the lowering at sunset has looser restrictions. If the flag is illuminated it can fly at night.

There is a website for up-to-the-minute HALF-STAFF notifications, but the major half-staff dates are:

* May 15, Peace Officers Memorial Day

* September 11

* (early October) Sunday of Fire Prevention Week

* December 7, National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

The article discusses the pertinent information for flying the U.S. Flag: which flag takes precedence if flying more than one, which way is “right side up” etc.

Pity there’s so little history of the flag. Websites do exist. And what would talk of the flag be without talk of Betsy Ross! so here is some additional information:

The rule of thumb for FLYING YOUR FLAG Memorial Day is: Half-Staff from sunrise until noon, then Full Staff the rest of the day.
Here at CellularWindowShades.com we are having our own MEMORIAL DAY celebrations: our 20% off Skylight Shades Sale continues through Monday, May 27th.

Great New “How To” Video

cordloop video

This video augments our written instructions, mailed with every “Valet Kit” (2 cords per kit) order; it does not replace it. So now two great sources for Do-It-Yourselfers.

The instructions are specific to the Symphony Shade brand of window blinds, though you should be able to extrapolate the general concept, if you have some other type of cord loop shade. Give the video a look! It’s an easy in-home fix to a broken window shade.
