A Vermont Gold-Medalist: 1912

Posted on: August 1, 2012

Last week’s issue of 7 Days had an exceptionally interesting article on Albert Lovejoy Gutterson.

I’ll leave you to read Thomas Simon’s piece yourself, and just say that Gutterson’s Gold came in the Long Jump (aka Broad Jump / Running Broad Jump) at the 1912 Stockholm Games.

This emblematic photo comes from the University of Vermont — the athlete gave his name to the campus’ Gutterson Field House.

One amazing part about 7 Days’ article is the timeline: I can’t imagine athletes today working to get to the Games as Gutterson did in 1912.
